Synopsis

Sejdo, a Roma from Kosovo is now living in Slovenia, after he was forcibly deported from Switzerland, Sweden and Germany. He meets with Hariz, an NGO activist, who is trying to understand his situation and find ways for Sejdo to obtain the Refugee status in Slovenia.

Biography of Director

Sami Mustafa is an award winning independent documentary director, producer and writer. He is founder of Romawood, Rolling Film Festival, as well as acting as artistic director and one of the founders of The International Romani Film Commission fostering Roma Cinema. He is also a film tutor who gives opportunity to young Roma people to learn and to express other lives, experience and identity through artistic methods, while producing documentary films.

THE QUEEN OF SILENCE

Synopsis

10 year old Denisa is an outcast in many ways. She is an illegal citizen of a gypsy camp in Poland, a woman in a patriarchal gypsy community and most of all – she doesn’t speak; her severe hearing disabilities have never been diagnosed. She lives in a world of her own, full of rhythm and dance, imitating the glamorous women from the Bollywood DVDs she found in a nearby dump. Dancing, she can be anyone she wants, even a queen, and express what she can‘t say – joy, sadness and fear.

Biography of Director              

Agnieszka Zwiefka was born in 1978 in Poland. For over 12 years she has cooperated with TVP as an author of various awarded TV programs and short documentary films. In 2007 she obtained her PhD in new media and ever since has worked as a lecturer of television journalism and interactive films at the University of Wroclaw specializing in multimedia storytelling.

Open Society supports dozens of Roma-led initiatives across Europe, of which we can mention the Roma Education Fund, the European Roma Rights Center, the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture and the Roma Entrepreneurship Development Initiative.

The Open Society Foundations have sought to amplify the voice of Roma advocates in a series of videos distributed widely on online channels. Examples of this work include the short films Redefining Roma Culture; Gypsies, Roma, Travellers: An Animated History and Roma, a New Generation.

DREAM CORNERS

Synopsis

This mini project aims to support the young generation of the Roma community. It was made possible with the help of the community volunteers willing to support first grade Roma children with "Dream Corners". The volunteers built small tables and chairs, collected different school supplies and arranged them at the families’ houses. This supports the first graders to have fun doing creative activities and have a more successful beginning of primary school.

Biography of Director
Denis Mustafa was born in 1996 and made his first film when he was 11 years old. He was a trainee on Jekh Kham Jekh Sel / One Sun One Nation, a film that was shown in more than twenty film festivals in Europe, US, and Latin American. In 2010, he made another short film “The Dream Power” which won the Rolling Film Festival audience award that year.

His film "TOXIC FUN", made in a workshop in Plemetina, Kosovo, was awarded with the Merit Award at the DEPOK Film Festival in Budapest. Denis Mustafa sees his future in making documentary films about Roma people. He wants to show his capacities and to be an example for other young Roma filmmakers. With his films he wants to portray the life of Roma in different perspectives and stories of success.

A HOLE IN THE HEAD

Synopsis

Little is known about the tragedy of the Roma and Sinti during the Second World War. They were murdered by the tens, hundreds and thousands; in concentration camps, by the edges of mass graves and roadsides, by rifle butts, hammers or gas. Silence surrounds them. For years they existed and still exist on the edge of society. They survived and keep their memory and scars as proof. In a world where fascism is once again prevalent, they are one of the last living witnesses to the Holocaust. They exist with a hole in their head, an imprint from the past.

Biography of Director

Since 2002 Robert is a founder and CEO of atelier.doc Ltd., which was established as an independent production company (www.atelierdoc.sk).

In his professional carrier he filmed and produced many feature- and tv documentaries and tv series, many of which achieved a significant recognition at numerous festivals domestically and internationally. His filmmaking focuses on current social topics that cope with “traumatic” heritage of historical events in Central Europe in the 20th century. Now he holds an academic appointment of Assistant professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava where he leads the course: the Directing of documentary film and Auteur documentary film.

TRAPPED BY LAW

Synopsis

An odyssey, coming of age and family separation story of two brothers filmed over the course of five years since the law of “forced reintegration” was signed between Kosovo and Germany and other EU states.

Kefaet and Selami, two young brothers and rap artists grew up in the hip-hop culture of Essen/Germany. Kefaet was born in Kosovo and taken by his parents to Germany at the age of four. He was married and has two children. Selami was born in Essen and has never been to Kosovo at all. During a dramatic night in March 2010, they are deported to Kosovo, a complete unknown country to them. Separated from their family and friends they try to cope with their situation and do everything in their power to return to Germany. But administration and asylum laws are standing in their way.
