Letter of Forgiveness

Set in 1855 in the household of a wealthy Romanian noblewoman, the film follows Maria, a Roma slave fighting to secure freedom for her son, Dinca. As important guests arrive for dinner and the household prepares for the evening, Maria sees an opportunity to change their fate. Part of a future feature-length project, the film offers a glimpse into the final years of Roma slavery in Romania, which officially ended in 1856. During that time, the Romanian word used for freeing a person from slavery was the equivalent of “forgiveness,” meaning a Roma slave was said to be “forgiven” from slavery.
